Some trees have two or three trunks of about the same size growing out of one fork, what arborists call codominant stems, often with bark pressed into the joint between them, called included bark. As they get bigger, the fork can split, especially with ice or wind. A heavy limb reaching out over the house is another common worry.
A cable can let you keep a tree with a weak fork. It goes in about two thirds of the way from the fork to the tips of the limbs, and it limits how far the stems can spread apart, which lowers the chance the fork splits. It is installed to the ANSI A300 standard for supplemental support systems.
Jacob looks at the tree first. If the fork is already failing or the wood is rotten, cabling is not the answer and he will say so.
